解放軍2日出動包括殲擊機在內的一共13架軍機，經宮古海峽飛往西太平洋與航經附近海域的艦艇編隊進行「海空聯合實兵」操演。2016年9月25日，解放軍出動 40多架各型軍機在西太平洋遠海訓練，當時是殲擊機（戰鬥機）首次通過宮古海峽，結果短短不到半年，中國的殲擊機就在西太與艦艇「背靠背」演習，進展可說相當快速。

日本防衛省統合幕僚監部2日指出，Y-8早期警戒機1架、轟炸機6架、殲擊機（戰鬥機）6架，一共13架戰機，從東海海域穿越沖繩主島與宮古島之間的上空通過（見下圖）；同一天，吳港的海上自衛隊第12衛隊護衛艦，證實在宮古島東南方120~200公里海域，有2艘廣州級（052B型）驅逐艦，那霸的海上自衛隊第5航空群的P3C海上巡邏機，則證實在久米島南南西方90公里處，有一艘 054A型飛彈護衛艦（江凱級），並且確認這些戰艦都往西北方前進。

較值得關注的是，解放軍轟炸機在2015年11月飛越宮古海峽上空後，去年9月25日更組織轟-6K、蘇-30、加油機等40多架多型軍機，大規模飛越宮古海峽赴西太平洋開展訓練。當時，解放軍軍方還特別強調，遠航過程中實施了偵察預警、海上突擊、空中加油等訓練課題，檢驗空軍部隊遠海實戰能力。

當時，最令人印象深刻的是首次有蘇-30飛出宮古海峽，結果半年不到，中國的戰鬥機就可在西太平洋與艦隊共同演練，象徵解放軍空中武力在第一島鏈之外初具打擊能力。

「宮古海峽」（又稱「宮古水道」）位於沖繩島及宮古島之間，是中國海軍穿越第一島鏈進入西太平洋、美軍進入男生斜背包中國東海的重要航道。引發中日主權爭議的釣魚台列嶼距離宮古島只有170公里。

由於中國軍機許多行動都會東出西太平洋，往往只要起飛，日本戰機就會緊急升空進行跟蹤。日本《共同社》在2月25日才報導指出，考慮中國軍機在釣魚台周圍活動愈來愈頻繁，日本防衛省調整自衛隊戰機緊急升空數目，從以往的2架應對1架，增加至以4架應對1架。分析人士指出，這次調整是日本自衛隊自1958年以來史無前例之舉，緊張局勢隨著日本的強化態勢一觸即發。
